Once the daily headphones I use for my iPhone gave up the ghost, I decided that it was time for a new pair. Previously I have owned numerous high quality headphones from Sennheiser to Audio-Technica, and I was looking to purchase another high quality pair with an excellent design and quality, in a portable format for on-the-go listening. Initially I was looking at the Koss Porta-Pro, which I read had a design which had not changed much since the 80s. There was widespread praise for its value for money and the level of bass it could put out, however I also read complaints of the headband pulling on hair, and a terrible build quality. More importantly, as it's of an open design, and as I do a lot of commuting, reports of excessive sound leak made me decide against it.

There was not a great deal of information about these AKG K450 headphones on the internet, but from the specification on the AKG website and impressions from the information I found, it seemed the right way to go. I purchased and received it three days after ordering by Royal Mail's First Class delivery.

Opening the box itself was a treat - it was extremely well packaged in an attractive and stylish enclosure, and was interested to see the product had the red dot logo on the box from winning a design award. It indeed had an absolutely ingenious design. My first impressions were that it was very sturdy and the ear pads were highly cushioned. I was particularly impressed by the non-captive nature of the cable, and two lengths which were provided. This cable did not have a standard 3.5mm port on the headphone end, however, so replacements would be through AKG and their 2 year warranty. One negative point I can think of is thinness of the cable and the size of the connector, which, when plugged in to my iPhone, protrudes someway from the audio device (it was not as small as they could have made I think), and overall it also seemed rather flimsy.

The headphones arrived with a very strong hard-backed carry case, which was a little bigger than I'd hoped but it was definitely protective, and enclosed the folded-up headphones fine. Once I'd plugged in the headphones I was impressed with the level of bass output, and I can say these are definitely tuned towards the lower ranges. Mid-range and treble did seem slightly muddy due to this, but extremely listenable nonetheless. This probably improves with burn in and as one listens over time they do get better. The headphones can be driven incredibly easily and is capable of outputting an extremely high level of decibels. In fact, the first thing I did was switch my iPhone's volume lock on at a level of 50%, as I didn't want to blow my eardrums inadvertently.

When I'm wearing and walking outdoors with the headphones, the fact that it has only a single cable from one side of the headphones (rather than cables from both sides) is a great benefit, as it doesn't come in the way at all. Sound isolation is also very good; outside sounds are deadened but not silent, mainly due to the thickness of the cushions and the ergonomic fit of the headphones. If you are looking for a pair of sturdy headphones which will last you for years to come, and provide a decent on-the-go audio experience I highly recommend this pair. Hopefully the investment should pay off in the long-run.

I wanted my next pair of headphones to be good! I wasn't dissapointed with these - my first pair of mini's and first AKG's. Though a bit on the pricey side - I'm ready to pay for good quality if that means getting quality build/style/sound etc. these K450's delivered! I wanted something very portable and comfortable for those bus and train journeys. These are both portable - light and folds down into its own carry case and comfortable - the super soft pads and headband provide excellent grip without giving that "clamping" feeling. Styling and build is excellent. Music quality is excellent for such small headphones, amazingly they don't let too much sound leak in - even in central London!!! I am more than happy with these headphones. My first AKG's - I think a great start!

I bought a pair of these locally so that I could listen before buying. I was very surprised at how boomy and muddled the bass is and how weak the midrange and higher frequencies are. Unfortunately the shop was so noisy that I didn't feel confident of my judgement there and then. After all, those reviews and awards must be right....magazine awards have some integrity and aren't just driven by advertising budgets and freebies ....right? So I bought them, took them home, listened and was again surprised at how bad these are. I then ran them in, despite AKG and other reputable manufacturers stating it isn't necessary and makes zero or negligible difference. After being broken in by extended playback overnight at moderately high levels they sounded ...exactly the same!

I'll describe the perceived deficiencies and also the similar products I'm using to make the comparison:

Similar products I own:

Sennheiser HD 500 Fusion - a 10 year old, full size, open back headphone of good quality.

Sennheiser CX 95 - A mid range in-ear earphone, a very nice earphone with no obvious shortcomings.

Klipsch Image X1 - The Amazon store's Klipsch Image S2 - a very cheap in-ear earphone whose sound is remarkably good for the price.

I compared these with the AKG using some music that easily exposes poor headphones. First CD was Elizabethan Songs and Consort Music and I listened to the second track. The music is performed by a viol consort and the song sung by a mezzo soprano, so there is a challenging mix of deep, continuous, richly textured bass tones and some very powerfully delivered and sustained high notes. The AKGs surrendered without a fight. The bass sounds were overblown, booming and muddled. The highest notes of the singer were rendered with unpleasant harshness and were truly wince inducing. Even the Klipsch, which have a reputation for exaggerated bass, sounded neutral and revealing in comparison. None of my other phones had the slightest trouble rendering the very fine mezzo soprano voice without harshness, even at high levels.

Next track was from Seya and I chose track 5. The music is brilliant but unfortunately it's one of those albums produced to be as loud as possible - the dreaded "Loudness War" brick wall mix with the kind of subtlety and dynamics you'd otherwise only experience when falling head first down a long, steep flight of stone steps. It's a challenge too far for budget in-ear phones with their naturally smaller sense of space - too loud, too narrow, too intense - about as enjoyable as a dentist's drill. The AKGs were a little better than in-ears with this kind of material and I could listen without the overwhelming urge to switch it off or turn it down, but still no match for the old Sennheiser headphones.

Finally I listend to Bleeding Heart from Jimi Hendrix's War Heroes, an old CD from before the "Loudness War" re-issues. This sounded OK-ish with the AKG's, they do bring out percussion really well for a small headphone. But overall it sounded much nicer on all my other phones. There's more to music than booming bass and cymbal splashes.

The AKGs handle percussive sounds very well for a small headphone, both the deep sounds of drums and the high impact and decays of cymbals being struck. The problems lie in between. The very exaggerated bass muddies everything because it booms so badly, and the inability to decently render the higher end of the human vocal range is a complete failure. These are headphones which have serious faults but which might initially or briefly sound great with much modern chart/dance music, which is to say they seem to be designed more for the salesman with 5 minutes to sell them than for the person who is going to listen with them for years.

I took mine back and got a refund.

Some positives:

They are very comfortable.
The cable is a sensible length (120cm) for use with personal players.
They have good sensitivity so are easily loud enough with mp3 players, phones, tablets etc.
They will help keep your ears warm in winter.

Features

Bose-own innovations now use microphones on the inside and outside of both ear cups to pick up and cancel out more of the noise around you for major noise reduction over a broader range of frequencies. Bose’s proprietary TriPort® acoustic headphone structure has small vents in the ear cups that deliver a tonally-balanced sound performance, with rich bass notes, from lightweight, on-ear headphones. The frequency response of the headphones is tuned electronically using active equalisation technology, to create an amazing sound performance. Two detachable audio cables are provided, for more ease-of-use than permanently connected Y-cables. This includes a cable for selected Apple products and a cable for general use. An inline microphone makes hands-free iPhone conversations possible, and allows access to various voice applications, like Voice Control and VoiceOver, for selected Apple devices. Switch between your music and calls, and stay in control of track selection, volume and voice applications on certain Apple devices with the inline three-button remote. Advanced ear cushions, available only from Bose, are engineered with innovative materials that create an all-important acoustic seal, which helps to cancel noise out, while fitting comfortably. Flat-folding ear cups swivel 90 degrees for convenient portability and storage in the included carrying case, which protects the headphone and your accessories when you’re on the go.
